ONZM, FANZCA, FFPANZCA, FRCA and Hon FFFLM, he is Head of the Department of Anaesthesiology and responsible for Anaesthesia-related Simulation at the Advanced Clinical Skills Centre, at the University of Auckland. He is a Councillor and Chair of the Quality and Safety and Research Committees of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists, and Chair of the Quality and Safety of Practice Committee of the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA). He led the Safe Anaesthesia Group of the World Health Organisation’s Safe Surgery Saves Lives Initiative. He is co-author of Errors, Medicine and the Law (CUP, 2001), Essential Perioperative Transoesophageal Echocardiography (Butterworth Heinemann 2003), Safety and Ethics in Healthcare (Ashgate, 2007) and various peer-reviewed papers, reflecting a strong interest in human factors, patient safety and simulation. He specialises in cardiac anaesthesia and in the management of chronic pain and refractory angina pectoris with spinal cord stimulation.
