Lifebox Welcomes Three New Global Governance Council Members

Founded in 2011 by four leading global health organizations and chaired by Dr. Atul Gawande, the organization utilizes tools, training, and partnerships to help improve the delivery of safe surgery globally. Lifebox’s flagship program developed a low-cost and low-resource-adapted pulse oximeter for monitoring patients during anesthesia and has now put the Lifebox pulse oximeter in the hands of over 20,000 anesthesia providers in more than 100 countries.

We are honored to welcome three highly esteemed medical professionals and leaders in global health to the governance council of Lifebox,” said Dr. Atul Gawande, Lifebox’s Global Chair.  “Drs. Miliard, Evans, and Roy each bring a wealth of experience and perspective in global surgery and anesthesia to Lifebox that will enhance our work to improve the safety of surgery and anesthesia around the world.”

The new Global Governance Council members are:

Professor Miliard Derbew, MD, FRCS, FACS,  FCS (ECSA), is a Professor of Pediatric Surgery at the College of Health Sciences, Addis Ababa University, principal investigator for Medical Education Partnership Initiative Junior Faculty project for Ethiopia, and immediate past president of the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA).

Dr Derbew’s involvement with Lifebox includes acting as an advisor to Lifebox’s Clean Cut program in Ethiopia as well as serving as chair of the Lifebox McCaskey Ethiopia Surgical Safety Teamwork Fellows Advisory Committee.

 

Faye Evans MD, is an anesthesiologist in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital and an Assistant Professor of Anaesthesia at Harvard Medical School.  Dr. Evans is the current Chair of the Society of Pediatric Anesthesia’s (SPA) Global Committee, a member of WFSA’s Education Committee, the vice-chair of the ASA’s Global Humanitarian Outreach Committee, and is on the Medical Advisory Board of Smile Train.

Dr Evans’ involvement with Lifebox includes being a member of the Education Advisory Committee and the Program Committee; co-drafting the pulse oximeter training guidelines and acting as a faculty representative on behalf of the organisation.

 

Nobhojit Roy, MS, MPH, PhD, is a general and trauma surgeon who has been a Lancet Commissioner for Global Surgery. Dr Roy has served as the National Advisor of Public Health Planning and Evidence at the think-tank of the Indian Ministry of Health & Family Welfare called the National Health Systems Resource Centre (NHSRC). His surgical department of BARC Hospital (Government of India) is the SEARO region’s WHO Collaborating Centre for research on surgical care delivery in low and middle-income countries (LMICs).

Dr Roy has acted as a longtime advisor to Lifebox as well as a representative in India.

 

Lifebox welcomed the new trustees to its global team during a convening of the Lifebox Global Governance Council chaired by Dr. Gawande in Boston on October 19th.
