FOR RELEASE – November 5 2020: Global safe surgery and anesthesia non-profit Lifebox, appoints two new roles to its global team with Dr. Negussie Tihitena Mammo and Senait Bitew as Global Clinical Director and Head of Programs for East Africa respectively. 

As Global Clinical Director, Dr. Mammo – an Associate Professor of Pediatric Surgery and Consultant General and Pediatric Surgeon – will provide clinical leadership across Lifebox’s programs to improve the safety of surgery and anesthesia in low- and middle-income countries.

As Head of Programs for East Africa, Senait Bitew – a nurse by training who has worked at Lifebox for two years as a Program Manager – will design and deliver Lifebox’s strategic plan across the East African region.

Dr. Tihitena Negussie MammoGlobal Clinical Director. 

Dr. Mammo is an Associate Professor of Pediatric Surgery and a Consultant General and Pediatric Surgeon with 14 years experience at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital. Dr. Mammo has served on the Executive Boards of both the Ethiopian Medical Association (EMA) and the Surgical Society of Ethiopia, as well as serving as Chair of the national Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in Ethiopia, Coordinator of the CPD centers at Addis Ababa University’s College of Health Sciences, and the EMA.

Senait Bitew Alemu Head of Programs for East Africa.

Senait will lead on the delivery of Lifebox’s strategic plans across the region. Senait is a nurse by training with a Masters in Public Health and has extensive experience of working in the hospital and healthcare sector.

Lifebox is a nonprofit organization that works to improve the safety of surgery and anesthesia in low- and middle-income countries. Founded in 2011 by four leading medical organizations and chaired by surgeon and writer – Dr. Atul Gawande – Lifebox works across three core pillars of Safer Surgery – improving anesthesia safety, reducing surgical infection rates, and strengthening surgical teamwork.
