Lifebox Australia and New Zealand (Lifebox ANZ)

Background

According to the Lancet Commision on Global Surgery, an estimated 99 million people go without safe surgical attention in Asia and Oceania.

In 2015, the Australia and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA), the Australian Society of Anaesthetists (ASA), Interplast Australia & New Zealand (Interplast), and the New Zealand Society of Anaesthetists (NZSA) joined together to help strengthen anesthesia and surgical safety in the Asia-Pacific. Known as Lifebox Australia & New Zealand (Lifebox ANZ), the grouping has helped to raise funds and implement projects across the region.

Through the use of an extensive network of contacts, along with the expertise of each organisation, Lifebox ANZ’s tireless work has impacted healthcare centers that are in need of low-resource adapted pulse oximeters to provide safer anesthesia for their patients.

By working together, Lifebox ANZ has extended our capacity to deliver training to local personnel in the use and maintenance of the pulse oximeters in the Asia-Pacific region, including Papua New Guinea  (PNG), Myanmar, Bhutan, Timor Leste and Mongolia.

Recent activity

  • Over the past 4 years, Lifebox ANZ has enabled the distribution of 150 oximeters throughout Myanmar, followed by essential training conducted by local instructors for the first time. Our ongoing project in Myanmar will place a further 700 oximeters into the country’s public hospitals.

  • In 2017, hospitals in Papua New Guinea received 30 new oximeters thanks to Lifebox ANZ champion Dr. Arvin Karu. An additional 8 oximeters were distributed in 2018, with the help of the PNG Society of Remote and Rural Health, which will assist the doctors working alone in isolated parts of PNG.

  • In 2018 Lifebox ANZ champion Dr. Cat Goddard travelled to the Philippines to deliver a ‘training of trainers’ workshop to 20 attendees working with Lifebox partner Americares to distribute oximeters and train staff at over 300 hospitals throughout the Philippines.

  • In 2019, Dr. Goddard also conducted workshops in Bangladesh with over 60 healthcare providers in attendance including nurses and support staff, all of whom were provided with training in pulse oximetry and teamwork. The Bangladesh Society of Anaesthesiologists (BSA) partnered with us to make this workshop possible.

“This coalition of organizations gives Lifebox a greater reach in the Asia-Pacific region, working closely with national anesthesia societies, surgical groups, and ministries of health to distribute oximeters and provide education on safer surgery and anesthesia”.
