About us

Lifebox is a global non-profit organization dedicated to improving the most invisible, essential component of any complex system: safety.

Because fundamentally, Lifebox is about saving lives.

Launched in 2011, Lifebox is the only non-governmental organization devoted to safer surgery and anesthesia in low-resource countries.

We build networks across professional, academic, and commercial organizations in more than 100 countries worldwide, and we’ve helped to make more than 10 million operations safer so far.

For more information, check out the history of Lifebox, scan our latest annual report or watch founder and chair Professor Atul Gawande explain our work on the frontline of the global surgical safety crisis.

And please consider making a donation to support our lifesaving work.
