Leadership Transition at Lifebox

After over nine years as Global CEO of Lifebox, Kris Torgeson will depart in June. Lifebox is grateful for her service and looks ahead with confidence, appointing Judy Ngugi as Interim CEO and launching a search for our next Global CEO.

Kris Torgeson is stepping down as Global CEO of Lifebox, after leading Lifebox through a period of significant growth and impact. She leaves the organization with expanded reach, stronger partnerships, and a solid strategic foundation.

“After over nine years of transformative leadership, Kris Torgeson leaves Lifebox in a position of genuine strength, both programmatically and strategically,” said Dr. Tom Weiser, Lifebox Global Governance Council Chair. “Our partnerships are deep and impactful, and we have a strong portfolio of programs that address important problems in patient care which drive our impact. We are enormously grateful for her vision, dedication, and passion. and the foundation she has built.”

Under Kris’ leadership, Lifebox developed, tested, and scaled impactful programs to reduce surgical site infections, strengthen multidisciplinary teamwork, and invest in perioperative nursing leadership. During her tenure, Lifebox delivered its 37,000th pulse oximeter, marking a significant milestone in patient safety and closing roughly half of the original 77,000-theater ‘pulse oximetry gap’. Lifebox also launched new medical device programs, including the Smile Train-Lifebox capnograph for anesthesia monitoring in low-resource settings, and a surgical headlight developed with COAST for facilities with unreliable electricity. Ambitious new plans are already in progress to improve surgical and anesthesia safety for women and children over the coming five years.

“Leading Lifebox has been an immense privilege. I am so proud of the global team we have built, the partnerships we have formed, and the direct impact we have achieved to improve the safety of surgery and anesthesia for patients worldwide,” stated Kris Torgeson, outgoing Global CEO

Under the leadership of the Lifebox Global Governance Council (GGC), the search for Lifebox’s next Global CEO will begin immediately. To ensure continuity following Kris’ departure, the GGC is also pleased to announce that Judy Ngugi, Chief Finance and Administration Officer (CFAO), will serve as Interim CEO, from June 2026. Judy has over 20 years of experience in the development sector, including roles at the International Livestock Research Institute, the Kenya Human Rights Commission, Helen Keller International, and most recently Gatsby Africa, where she was Deputy Director for Operations and Finance.

We have every confidence in Judy’ Ngugi’s stewardship as Interim CEO, and we are committed to a thorough and competitive search for a leader who will take Lifebox forward, ” said Dr. Tom Weiser

“I am honored to step into this role at such an important moment of transition for Lifebox. Kris has built an organization of real impact – technically strong, deeply connected to the communities it serves, and genuinely committed to lasting change,” stated Judy Ngugi, the Interim CEO, Lifebox Foundation.”My focus as Interim CEO is to protect and build on that momentum: supporting our teams, maintaining the trust of our partners, and ensuring our work continues without interruption.”

Since 2011, Lifebox has made surgery and anesthesia safer for millions of patients worldwide. Yet the scale of the challenge remains vast. An estimated 5 billion people lack access to safe, timely, affordable surgical care, and those who do face preventable risks. Lifebox exists to change that reality for the better, one system, one clinician, and one operating room at a time.
