Tonga

Tonga is an island nation with a population of just over 100,000 spread across the archipelago    and where under-resourced hospitals struggle to provide healthcare to such a disparate group.

The main island, Tongatapu, hosts the biggest hospital – 160 beds with three fully functioning operating theatres, but even this didn’t have sufficient oximeters to monitor the bare minimum      of patients. The Prince Ngu Hospital in Vava’u, the second largest hospital in Tonga, has 80 beds and had just one pulse oximeter.

Thanks to efforts by the Australian Society of Anaesthetists, Lifebox® oximeters have been distributed to the three biggest hospitals in Tonga – in Tongatapu, Vava’u and Ha’apai.
