CASIEF-Lifebox Resident Challenge

A peer-to-peer fundraising competition for Canadian anesthesiology residency programs to raise funds to close the global capnography gap and bring safer anesthesia to everyone, everywhere.

Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society International Education Foundation (CASIEF) and Lifebox are calling on anesthesiology residency programs across Canada to join us in bridging the global gaps in safe anesthesia. By participating in the CASIEF-Lifebox Resident Challenge, you not only contribute to a noble cause but also stand a chance to gain recognition and network with other programs. The CASIEF-Lifebox Resident Challenge is a peer-to-peer fundraising competition in which participating residency programs compete to raise the most funds for global anesthesia safety.

All funds raised will support the distribution of and training on the Smile Train-Lifebox Capnograph to anesthesia providers in needs around the world.

How does the Challenge work?

Participating programs will nominate a team captain and sign up their team on the fundraising website, CASIEF’s CanadaHELPS page.

Participants will compete to raise the most funds, collecting donations through the CanadaHELPS page.

The 2026-2027 Challenge will run until the Canadian Anesthesiologist’s Society (CAS) Annual Meeting on June 11, 2027.

Participants can utilize this guide and toolkit to help them get started, plan their fundraiser, and access fundraising resources.

2025-2026 CASIEF-Lifebox Resident Challenge: A Successful First Year

The first annual CASIEF–Lifebox Resident Challenge brought together anesthesiology residents from six residency programs across Canada to support safer anesthesia globally.

Together, participating residency programs raised more than $10,000, surpassing our fundraising goal in the Challenge’s very first year. Every dollar raised will help expand access to lifesaving capnography by supporting the distribution of capnographs and training for anesthesia providers in Burundi, Ethiopia, and Rwanda, helping make surgery safer for thousands of patients each year.

Congratulations to all of the residents, faculty champions, and supporters who made this inaugural Challenge a success. Your enthusiasm and commitment demonstrate the power of the next generation of anesthesiology leaders to improve patient safety around the world.
