Who we are

Lifebox is a global non-profit that works to improve the safety of surgery and anesthesia in low- and middle-income countries.

Our goal is to ensure that surgical teams everywhere can provide the safest care possible to their patients.

We work across three core pillars of Safer Surgery – improving anesthesia safety, reducing surgical infection rates, and strengthening surgical teamwork.  By working alongside local partners, Lifebox provides training and tools needed to save lives through safer surgery.

Chaired by surgeon and writer, Dr Atul Gawande, Lifebox was founded in 2011 by four of the world’s leading medical organizations. To date, Lifebox has provided medical equipment or held training workshops  in over 116 countries and trained more than 11,000 healthcare providers to make surgery safer for more than 35 million patients. As Lifebox enters our tenth year, we are launching an ambitious strategic plan to make every surgery safer. The theme of this plan – Stronger Teams, Safer Surgery – puts multidisciplinary teamwork at the heart of our approach. “For the first time in history, you’re more likely to die of a surgically treatable condition than an infectious disease. It is critical that we close the gap for the 5 billion people who don’t have access to safe surgery. The magic of Lifebox is that we are creating a movement, making safer surgery possible for patients everywhere and creating a better system as a whole.” Dr. Atul Gawande, Lifebox Co-founder and Chair.

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, our priority has been to adapt and develop tools and strategies to support our colleagues as they provide safe surgical and COVID-19 care during this global health emergency. Read here for more information on our COVID-19 response.
